The future look of Lexus.

Love it or hate it, that hourglass-shaped grille from the new Lexus GS isn’t going away anytime soon. At least, not if you’re to believe the LF-LC Concept, which debuted yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show and predicts the future of the Lexus design language.

1977 Chevy C30 HD Flatbed

Bought the recently re-released GMC Wrecker kit and am planning on building it up as a flatbed with fifth wheel hitch to haul a Galaxie tri-axle trailer. Here's where I'm at so far.

Unfortunately, upon opening the kit I found that the parts tree with the wheels and grille was non-existent. Of course, I then decided to custom build my own grille for it (the headlights are installed but taped off for painting), and I also grabbed a set of 1/32 Ford Aeromax Semi Truck wheels that just happened to fit in the kit tires, and give it the look of a 10-lug hub conversion.

As for drivetrain, I as most others cut out the molded in engine and exhaust sections and am planning on using a 368 cubic inch NASCAR spec GM V8 along with 4-speed manual. Should have plenty of power for the long haul.

Scion gets a sports car.

At first glimpse, the long-awaited 2013 Scion FR-S, revealed November 30 to an invitation-only crowd at a Hollywood studio, could be compared to a perfectly self-contained single episode. At the same time, to extend the show-biz metaphor, it also has the potential for variable endings, as you choose. Greeted with a techno serenade and pulsing lights, the FR-S drove down a runway flanked by a display of Toyota heritage models, including such immediate forebears as the Celica GTS and MR2, and by distant cousins like the Lexus LF-A and Toyota Supra Turbo.

Doctors use Formula One pit crews as safety model

American Medical News reports hospitals in at least a dozen countries are learning how to translate the split-second timing and near-perfect synchronisation of Formula One pit crews to the high-risk handoffs of patients from surgery to recovery and intensive care.
"In Formula One, they have checklists, databases, and they have well-defined processes for doing things, and we don't really have any of those things in health care."

Henry J WIP - FINALLY DONE - lotsa pics.

Haven't shared any WIP here in quite a while, so thought this would be fun Cool.

This is kinda a difficult kit to begin with the way the pieces fit, and the plastic is pretty brittle, at least on my kit. I decided to take it back to stock appearing as much as I could.  No bumpers or other parts available, but I discovered that a Lindberg '53 Ford kit could supply alot of the parts I needed to modify it. A '67 Corvette donor kit would supply the frame, and a '33 Willys kit would supply the SOHC engine/trans. I wanted to build the body back to stock as I really like the looks of them in stock trim, especially the rear wheel well opening, which was a little bit of a fun challange, to not only get the right shape, but same from side to side.

The doors are already opened, so that was nice. I added my own hinges, and then hinged the hood, but with a twist - to the front. A little street-rod look if it was real, and you pulled into a gas station to check the oil. Course, the sound of the "rumpy" motor might just give it away first.

Anyhow, here's the first pics of a fun project.

Ferrari 599 GTB Wraith by SR Auto Group

Some of the best tuning firms in the world don’t even bother working on mild-mannered programs; these tuners go straight to the big boys.

And quite frankly, you can’t get any more ’big boy’ than Ferrari, and in this particular case, the soon-to-be-replaced Ferrari 599 GTB.

Stunning might be an understatement to describe this car, just like one of SR Auto Group’s previous projects, the equally diabolical and luscious Project 612 Adonai.

The Charcoal Gray matte finish is attractive in its own right. Then you add a new Kresiegg exhaust system that just raises the decibel level of the supercar’s 620-horsepower, 6.0-liter V12 powerhouse engine. And just to finish off the program on a high note, SR Auto Group also fitted the Ferrari 599 GTB with a ridiculous set of 2WO wheels courtesy of PUR Wheels.

Even if this program is devoid of any performance modifications, the slick, sexy, and stealthy look of the Ferrari 599 GTB Wraith is enough reason for us to bow down to the boys at SR Auto Group.

Job well done, boys. Job well done.

Bob versus Dan.

The current-generation Chevrolet Malibu, which debuted in 2008, may have been the signature accomplishment of Bob Lutz's tenure at General Motors. The former GM vice president's celebrated sense of style and attention to detail heralded the first truly excellent Chevrolet passenger car in decades. Fast forward four years and one bankruptcy, and we have the next-generation Malibu -- the first car to bear the fingerprints of GM's present CEO, Dan Akerson. Although development was already under way by the time Akerson assumed the mantle in late 2010, he reportedly applied the full weight of his authority to rush the car to market in time for the new year rather than letting the current Malibu -- still competent but now dated -- languish until summer. Therefore, our biggest question prior to driving the new 2013 Malibu was, has Dan improved Bob's car or damaged it? Does the new Malibu consolidate and build upon the critical gains of its predecessor or has it suffered a setback because of its last-minute rush to production? The answer to both questions is "yes."

The Chevy Volt's powertrain is a massively impressive piece of engineering.

Our 2011 Automobile of the Year didn't earn a spot on our 2012 All-Stars list, but the Chevy Volt's powertrain is still a massively impressive piece of engineering. The Volt's key trick is a seamless transition between running on electricity and gasoline. The gas/electric drivetrain allows for roughly 35 miles of driving range using electricity stored in a large lithium-ion battery before firing up a small, four-cylinder gas engine for another 300 miles of range. The dual power sources offer all of the incentives of driving an electric vehicle -- charging at home, cheap energy, and the potential for reduced emissions -- while eliminating the inconvenience of limited range and slow charging times that afflict pure electric vehicles.

McLaren drivers out of title race

Is it now a three-way battle for the title? © Getty Images
Fernando Alonso is still the driver in the best position to win the drivers? title according to the Daily Telegraph?s Tom Cary.
?Focus and concentration will be of paramount importance and there is none stronger in this regard than Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso.?
The Guardian?s Oliver Owen thinks that it is Mark Webber?s title to lose now, and that this may be the Australian?s last realistic chance of winning the title.
?He has driven beautifully. Monaco and Silverstone spring to mind. He has been an uncompromising racer, not giving Vettel or Lewis Hamilton an inch in Turkey and Singapore respectively. Most importantly, he has largely avoided the bouts of brain fade that can wreck a season ? his on-track hooning in Melbourne when racing Hamilton being the only exception. But there is a feeling that for Webber it is now or never, that a chance of a tilt at the title may never come again. He is certainly driving as if that is the case and that has been his strength.?
According to The Mirror?s Byron Young, both McLaren drivers are now out of the title hunt after their fourth and fifth place finishes in Suzuka.
?McLaren's title hopes died yesterday in a weekend from Hell at Suzuka. Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and fifth in a Japanese Grand Prix they had to win to have the remotest chance of keeping their title bid alive."
The Sun?s Michael Spearman was of the same opinion, saying ?Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button's title hopes were in tatters after a shocker in Japan.?

Could there be such a thing as too much power?

Fun fact: if you try to spec and price out a 2012 135i on BMW's site, the configurator tacks on the dual-clutch gearbox -- a $450 option -- without your input. Talk about a sign of the automatic-obsessed times. Still, it isn't exactly a curse -- the seven-speed transmission, which is a new option for 2012, behaves fairly respectably. When cold, it occasionally is reticent to engage off the line, but otherwise proves smooth and lightning quick.

2007 Lexus LS460

2007 Lexus LS460
2007 Lexus LS460 - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
Will this finally be the Lexus that competes with top-tier German sedans? Judge for yourself with our new car coverage.

Seventeen years after Lexus introduced the first LS luxury sedan at the 1989 Detroit auto show, the company unveiled its fourth-generation flagship sedan, the LS460, in Motown. As successful as the LS400 and the LS430 have been, they have never quite measured up to the big, long-wheelbase offerings from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Jaguar in terms of sheer size, street presence, and prestige, even if they often exceeded them in refinement, reliability, and quality. Now that Toyota is expanding the Lexus brand beyond North America to Japan, Europe, and other world markets, the automaker hopes to compete neck-to-neck with the S-class, the 7-series, the A8, and the XJ8 with the LS460L, which debuted in Detroit as the first-ever, long-wheelbase LS. Lexus also announced that the new LS will be equipped with the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, a big poke in the eye to Mercedes, which introduced a seven-speed automatic only recently. "That's right," said Jim Press, president and COO of Toyota Motor Sales during the unveiling of the LS460. "Eight speeds. We're uppin' 'em one."

2007 Lexus LS600h Hybrid
2007 Lexus LS600h Hybrid - 2007 New Cars - Automobile Magazine
How do you get V-12 performance with V-8 efficiency? Hybrids, of course. Check out the big and classy Lexus LS600h in our New York Auto Show coverage.

Following up the debut of the new, 2007 Lexus LS460 and LS460 L, which were unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, Lexus has now rolled out the range-topping hybrid version, the LS600h L. The fourth Lexus hybrid model, the LS600h L is the only one to pair the company's electric drive system with a V-8 engine. Lexus puts the combined output of the 5.0-liter V-8 and the electric motor at more than 430 hp (versus 380 hp for the LS460's 4.6-liter V-8). The company claims that the hybrid delivers acceleration on a par with twelve-cylinder luxury sedans while providing fuel economy that beats competitors' V-8s. The LS600h L continues Lexus's philosophy of positioning its hybrids not as fuel-sipping green machines but as the highest-performing, top-spec models in the range. As such, the LS600h L will be the most expensive version of the LS, and will be offered in the United States with the long-wheelbase body only. Whereas the LS460 comes with rear-wheel drive, the hybrid will have standard all-wheel drive. Seating is for only four, with a console between the individual rear seats and power sunshades in the doors. A Maybach-style articulating footrest and a massage function are built into the rear seat, but--strangely--only for the right-side seat. It also features a navigation system that stores its data on a hard drive instead of on DVDs; LED headlights; XM satellite radio with real-time traffic info; and, perhaps most incredibly, an automatic parallel-parking function--push a button, and the car backs itself into the space. As an option, the LS has a pre-collision system that not only uses camera to scan the road ahead for obstacles but also trains a camera on the driver, to assess whether he or she is responding adequately; the system flashes a light and sounds an alarm to warn the driver of a possible impending crash, helps the car respond by quickening the steering ratio and beginning to apply the brakes on its own, and prepares the car by tightening the seatbelts and closing the windows. The LS600h L will hit the road next April, six months after its non-hybrid sister model.

2007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept - Latest News, Auto Show Coverage, and Future Cars - Automobile Magazine
Lexus isn't done dipping its toes into the deep end of the sports car market. Is this second LF-A concept the real thing?

The first hints that Lexus might sell an exotic sports car came exactly two years ago here at the Detroit auto show with the unveiling of the first LF-A concept. That car's primary goal was to introduce the "L-finesse" design direction to the world, but public excitement pushed the brand to take their toy to the track. But now, just as Nissan did with the GT-R and as Mitsubishi is also doing here with the Prototype X, Lexus is showing a second concept of the same car. Is it just another tease? "The first LF-A was pure concept, but one that we went so far as to conduct engineering analysis on," says Lexus general manager Bob Carter. "This latest concept is much closer to a vehicle that we would bring to market, and one in which we will be gauging consumer interest." In other words yes, it is still a tease. And because it might see production, this swoopier LF-A might be an even bigger tease. Thanks a lot, Lexus.

2011 Season Review: The year of Red Bull

Without a doubt, 2011 was the year of Red Bull in Formula One. They had won both the driver?s and constructors titles in 2010 but it had gone down to the wire. This time around there was less drama and more style as Vettel wrapped up the title with races to spare and the constructors [...]

Youth in (re)Volt.

Kids. Young’uns. Whippersnappers. Generation Y. Millennials. Call them what you may, but don’t call them irrelevant when it comes to purchasing power. General Motors estimates this group, which consists of about 80 million consumers in the U.S alone., has a collective purchasing power of about $1 trillion. That’s the sort of gold vein any automaker would love to tap into, but few do so effectively.

Report: Bentley Courting Maybach Fans, Including Jay-Z, Samuel L. Jackson

What rhymes with Mulsanne? We?re not sure, but we?ll likely soon find out: it?s been reported that Bentley is now aggressively courting former Maybach fans and owners, including rapper Jay-Z and actor Samuel L. Jackson. Reuters reports that Bentley President Wolfgang Duerheimer said that Maybach?s imminent departure from the ultra-luxury car market means more room [...]

A Heavy-Duty Perspective

Amidst the usual stream of crossovers, sedans, and two-doors passing through the Automobile Magazine garage, a heavy-duty truck is an anomaly. The slow steering, the graceless ride, and the hard-shifting transmission are strange qualities for a modern four-wheeled vehicle, even if they are the designed-in traits of massive capability. Every time we drive a heavy-duty [...]

Super Scrapper: Forrest Lucas

Super Scrapper: Forrest Lucas
Super Scrapper: Forrest Lucas - Automobile Magazine
From a small trucking company, Forrest Lucas built an empire based on lubricants and motorsports.

Three months before the glitz of Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Forrest Lucas settles into his parked motorhome as the junior and modified karts buzz demonically around Las Vegas Motor Speedway's off-road course. It's the first program after star driver Rick Huseman died in a plane crash, but the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series has drawn a big crowd of stoked young people, many wearing the Lucas Oil Products logo somewhere on their bodies. The company's logo is also on the camera helicopter, on the water truck and the grader that groom the track between races, and even on a radio-controlled model a kid plays with near the grandstand. The Lucas Oil Productions rig is on-site, recording the action for later broadcast on any of several networks, including Lucas's own newly acquired fixer-upper, MAVTV. Lucas is looking splendid in a nicely detailed burnt-orange shirt and sharply creased black Wranglers. An Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl XLI watch adorns his left wrist. The slight stoop in his posture betrays the fact that he'll turn seventy on February 25, yet Lucas shows no gray hair. He flashes an alabaster smile when I present the quart of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer that I'd purchased for $10 at Pep Boys and repeat what the counterman said: "It's good stuff. It works. They have good additives."
